Doing it in the dark…

Doing it in the dark…

I love doing it with the lights on. Sometimes I even get fancy and bring a few candles into the mix.

But lately, especially at night, I’ve noticed that I just love doing it in the dark…

“What is she talking about?” you ask…

Well of course…

I’m speaking about… showering.

If you haven’t yet tried taking a shower in complete darkness, then I’d highly recommend you give it a go. And when I say darkness I mean – total darkness.

The bathroom is the room that most often is without a window. And while I’d never want to live in a house without windows, in this case it can actually be an advantage.

When you remove the sense of sight, then all other senses become heightened…

Touch…

The feeling of warm water streaming down your skin. Liquid flow from the crown of your head and all the way down… The soft silky touch of your hands as you massage yourself with shower gel. Fingers running through your hair…

For the advanced: alternate between hot and cold, or simply finish off with cold water (keep on breathing!) for a pleasurable shock-refreshing experience.

Smell…

Shower gel, essential oils, fragrant steam rising all around you.

Sound…

Splash. Trickle. Gush. The sound of the day being washed away in your own personal water fall. Your breath as you take it all in, and let it all go…

Taste…

Hmm, well… ;) If you bring some fruit into the shower that you can reach for and taste, then it definitely adds yet another dimension to the shower experience.

(And of course, if you bring someone with you into the shower, then you have even more possibilities for ALL of the above ;)

When I shower in darkness I feel closer to the experience. All sensations are amplified an intensified. My Sensual Awakening is raised.

I also notice that all my movements become more measured and graceful when I can’t see anything. I have to “sense my environment” so I don’t knock things over. Hands delicate like an Indian dancer…

Now before I go I want to leave you with another ‘darkness story’ from when I was in Thailand some time ago…

One evening a friend and I had to walk from one beach to the next, to get to the closest ATM. This involved a one hour walk through the jungle, and because of timing and this and that we ended up making the walk at night.

ALMOST complete darkness, with just a thin sliver of silvery new moon to light our path.

The night sky was beautiful and clear. With a myriad of stars that felt strangely close to us…

The road we walked on was pretty non-solid and extremely uneven at times, so we really had to sharpen our feeling sense to not fall.

The further we walked we felt the atmosphere thicken around us. Deep jungle. Warm humid night. Sounds of birds and animals. Fireflies. Feet feeling the way.

It gave us a glimpse of what it must have been like to walk this earth thousands of years ago, before humans started interfering with nature.

In our so very light-polluted society – give yourself the gift of darkness from time to time. Blind folded eating. Navigating your house or apartment without any lights on. If you notice fear, then breathe deeply into that and allow your body to relax.

And of course, tonight, take a shower in the dark.

If this touched anything in you – share it in a comment below. Like it, tweet it, share it with your friends.

And if you have a favorite shower, water or darkness experience to share, then oh yes please, leave a comment and tell us your story.

(Feeling shy? That’s very human ;) You can be as explicit or censored as you like!)
